Future Memories 2020 | Catherine Nelson

January 30, 2021 - March 6, 2021

In 2010, Catherine Nelson developed a series of work titled Future Memories which captured the essence of place as a complex ecological story. Future Memories 2020 revisits this concept, reinforcing Nelson’s ongoing engagement with the environment while offering a plea to consider humanity’s destructive impact on the planet. In an interview about this new series, Nelson says “I wanted to highlight what we have now and what we cannot take for granted anymore – or they will become the memories of our future. We are nature, so our ability to destroy it is a self-destructive act.”

The source images for these new works came from location shoots in Costa Rica, Greenland and the Azores, places which represent the full spectrum of environment. In contrast to the rich biodiversity of Costa Rica, the food chain in Greenland is short, pointing to the fragility of some environments. Together, these works represent the interconnectedness of the whole.
